Grand Prairie’s Grand Activities
Dec 28th, 2009 by sophie smith
There’s a story about how Grand Prairie Texas, received its name that’s most likely apocryphal of an actress stepping down from a train and proclaiming, “Oh, what a Grand Prairie,” but long before that happened, the town was first named Dechman by a man who traded his wagons and oxen for some land in Dallas County — Alexander McRae Dechman — in 1863. Today, it’s a family community of a little over a hundred and sixty thousand, with terrific proximity to the Fort Worth-Dallas International Airport, a place that prides itself on its friendly people and many family friendly activities.
You could easily go a few miles to any of the entertainment possible in Fort Worth and Dallas, but Grand Prairie has its own charms. In its hotels Grand Prarie has a number of affordable and comfortable rooms. In its theaters Grand Prairie contains both the Uptown CCC Theater and the NOKIA Theater. In the former, you will find an historic movie theater from 1950, renovated and reopened in the last few years. It’s used today for plays and dance troupes, roadshows, and even movies now and then. The latter, the NOKIA Theater, opened close to ten years ago, and is a flexible theater venue capable of holding over six thousand patrons, and is a place that has hosted many diverse acts from Jeff Foxworthy to the Eagles to the Radio City Rockettes.
Grand Prarie, just like Hollywood, also has a Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum and a Tussaud’s Wax Museum, although in the case of Grand Prarie, the wax museum belongs to Louis Tussaud as opposed to Madame Tussaud’s on Hollywood Boulevard. If none of this appeals, though, the city has a number of other items available, including a massive flea market known as Traders Village, which sees over four million visitors a year and contains over five thousand vendors.
Of course, if you need more to do, then Fort Worth-Dallas is only a few miles away!
