Baltimore is one of the United States’ historical cities and has had an interesting and dynamic role in much of the country’s development. Many of the landmarks and cultural icons present in the city testify to this and are a point of pride and also major attraction and point of interest for visitors. Other aspects of the city relate to the social interests of the contemporary public. This beautiful city by the harbor has a multitude of reasons to attract the numerous tourists it does every year and the Baltimore luxury hotels are there to offer them the best available accommodations.
The National Aquarium in Baltimore is just one of the major attractions that tourists visit during their stay. It was first opened in 1981 and was constructed as part of and during Baltimore’s urban renewal project. It is located in the Inner Harbor area of the city and is open to the public. The Aquarium features over 560 species of marine life and is considered to be one of the best aquariums in the country, and even the world. In 2006 Coastal Living gave it the distinction of number one aquarium in the United States. This is a major honorary status and the over 1.6 million visitors it receives every year can attest to this. It is the largest tourist attraction in the entire state of Maryland and continues to grow in popularity every year.
Some of the more popular attractions at the aquarium include the roof top rainforest, the ray pool, the shark tank with its multiple stories and the dolphin display. In addition, the aquarium continues to develop new programs that are both entertainment and educationally oriented. One of the hugely popular recently added programs in is the Dolphin Encounter. The experience allows visitors to get into the water with the trainer and interact with the bottlenose dolphins in a supervised one on one exchange. It is structured to include both a training and play session. This is one of the most rewarding experiences many of the visitors to the aquarium state they experience. This encourages greater awareness of dolphin survival issues and preservation support.
